Overview The purpose of this drill is to work on forcing your opponent to hit a weak boast to your forehand so that you can get into position for the forehand kill.
The key is to bury your opponent in the back corner with a deep crosscourt so that all he/she can do is hit a weak boast into the middle of the court—the higher the better. Once you recognize the impending weak shot from your opponent, move forward of the T, get your racquet up, and drive the ball into the nick.
Execution Start the drill with one player on each side of the court just to the side of the T. One player (A) hits a crosscourt drive while the other (B) responds with a weak boast. A then gets into position in front of the T with good balance and, with the racquet up high, hits the ball hard about six inches above the tin at a sufficient angle to hit the bottom of the side wall. If the ball does not hit the nick, player A then feeds himself to set up another crosscourt and the drill repeats, or A simply picks up the ball and repeats the sequence again. While this drill is not taxing physically, it will help you develop your ability to hit a winner off the weak boast.
Notes A variation of this drill, particularly for the more advanced player, is for player B to try getting to A’s forehand kill and responding with a slow rail. Player A then hits a straight drop, followed by B hitting a deep crosscourt, and A then hitting a weak boast to set B up for the forehand kill. This may be a difficult scenario to sustain, but it will introduce fitness elements that will not be present in the original scenario.
