The Trinity women Bantams, at the end of the 2000-2001 season, won their regular season match versus Harvard. But when it came time to again defend their honor, they fell by a one-point margin to nemesis Harvard. This year, that loss fueled their fire.
This year, Trinity captured the Barhite trophy from Harvard in regular season play, winning by a 5-4 scoreline. This year, again, the Trinity-Harvard match came down to a one-point victory/defeat margin. But this year it swung in Trinity’s favor. The 2001-2002 team became the school’s first women’s squash team to win the team champs. They became the first-ever non-Ivy League school to win the Howe Cup title.
2001-2002 Trinity Women's Team: L-R, 1st row: Sam Lewins, Bronwyn Cooper, Lynn Leong L-R, 2nd row: Mollie Anderson, Coach Wendy Bartlett, Lynnie Minkowski, Liz Frank, Pam Saunders L-R, 3rd row: Meridy Vollmer, Clare Austin, Barbara Escobar L-R, top row: Suzy Schwartz, Amanda Todd, Amy Brown, Amina Helal (Photo provided by Wendy Bartlett)
Incredible that in the 30-year the history of the Howe Cup, no non-Ivy League team has ever captured that trophy until now. In fact, Trinity is only the fifth team to have ever taken the title, behind Princeton (14 wins), Harvard (11), Yale (3) and Penn (1). Trinity was due. Coach Wendy Bartlett was perhaps feeling some pressure, as all squashheads know that the Trinity men have taken the NISRA men’s national team tournament title four years running.
