Fitz-Gerald: No Contest

British Open 2002

Sarah Fitz-Gerald in the 2002 British OpenSarah Fitz-Gerald proved once more that even at 5' 6” she is still head and shoulders above her peers and, as the possible challengers crumbled, some ignobly, she took her second British Open title without really being tested.

A great deal of hope was placed on Natalie Pohrer, who, since moving to the US has improved her fitness and therefore her overall performance. She had all the omens with her: a superb run in two tournaments in Egypt, in which she reached the final of both and notched up two wins over Cassie Campion and a semifinal win over Carol Owens, the newly minted New Zealander who has now jumped over compatriot Leilani Joyce to become world number two.

Owens, that up-and-down player, had been playing constantly and looked match sharp in the early rounds while Campion had been playing well enough to give indications that she was slowly but surely making her way back up to the number one spot.
