After disappointing pool play, No. 7 Canada loses to No. 14 Germany

After falling to No. 10 France in pool play, hosts Canada sought to redeem themselves by finishing 9th. But those hopes were dashed by the world No. 144 and German No. 3, Kathrin Rohrmuller, when she overcame a 2-1 deficit to beat World No. 44 Carolyn Russell.
Runa Reta, Canadian No. 1, had set a positive tone for the home team by quickly trouncing Daniella Schumann 2, 0, 5, but No. 2 Melanie Jans couldn't seal the victory when Germany's Katharina Witt stopped her in four games.
With local fans packed around Court 3, Carolyn Russell seemed to be buoyed by the support when she rattled off games two and three by scores of 9-3 and 9-4 to take the lead. But rather than wilting under the pressure, Rohrmuller patiently played error-free squash to even the match with a 9-6 fourth game.
In the fifth, Russell seemed to tighten up knowing that Canada's fate wrested in her hands. Several unforced errors by Russell staked Rohrmuller to a quick 7-love lead. But a series of backhand boast winners brought Russell back to 4-7 before Rohrmuller regained control and closed out the match 9-4.
Canada faces Austria next in hopes of finishing no worse than 13th, while Germany takes on the dissappointing Aussies with their eyes still set on finishing 9th |
