Melissa WinstanleyCool & Calm It's No Illusion |

Imagine walking into Boston's Symphony Hall, arguably the most famous performing arts building in the United States, to see a brand new all-glass ASB squash court being assembled in the middle of the expansive room. Each glass panel, carefully crated and shipped by truck from Atlanta, is handled delicately but diligently. There are less than 48 hours until the 2002 US Open is to begin and, CRASH, one of the panels drops and shatters into thousands of pieces.
The next day, less than five hours until show time, a transformer blows, knocking out the lights on court. Enter, Melissa Winstanley, Director of Operations for Event Engine, the tournament promotions company responsible for three of North America's mainstay events. Winstanley is the picture of composure in a moment of crisis at any tournament she is responsible for. 'Oh, that's illusion,' laughs this humble master organizer. Such is the infectious attitude of Winstanley. She instills confidence in those around her and makes everything seem so easy. Which is perhaps understandable for someone with nearly 20 years of experience with running major squash tournaments. |
